Fast paced, fun and fabulous country Primary School online visit
This month’s Sacred Heart Primary School Yea virtual author visits for Grade Prep – 2’s and 3-6’s was especially fun and fast-paced! This tiny school had big questions and the most thoughtful take on writing and story creating.
From my writing nook in the sand dunes to their schoolroom in the hills and bush – two fun-filled sessions with students who were dressed in belated Book Week costumes (Beetlejuice was my fav!)
We discussed:
- writers notebooks
- how good writing requires revising
- stories that speak to us
- if writers ever get sad or lose hope about what they’re writing (guilty!)
- how long it takes to write a book
- my own author journey
- if I’ve had any setbacks
- how to gain writing experience
- if writers make money (cough, cough)
- what lives under jetties
- how characters, setting, situations and themes make good stories
- and also cool locations in Yea to write stories about (I want to see all those Cheviot Tunnel spooky stories and the climate and water conservation ones inspired by the Y Water Discovery Centre.)
What a fabulous school to spend time with online! Thanks, Ms Elliot, Ms Leach, Mrs Ferris, Mrs Danieli, Mr Slevin and Mrs Degenhardt for Zooming me into your school.
Next time I’m in Yea, I’m dropping in and signing your books that Squishy Minnie Bookstore kept aside for you.
