Boneo Maze’s inaugural lantern festival LANTASIA has  delighted visitors to the Mornington Peninsula this summer. It’s Uno’s Garden meets an Enid Blyton land of make believe.

We’ve followed the glow of the lanterns and had a gorgeous time exploring this night garden on our peninsula doorstep this summer. The dazzling display of fantasy light sculptures throughout  Boneo Maze has drawn visitors from across Melbourne, with Lantasia continuing to run nightly until 27th January 2016.

This dusk lantern event also offers complementary lantern making workshops, with children taking home their own lantern creations.  But it’s the sculptures in the gardens which have captivated everyone. After 6pm each evening, the parks magical side comes to life with a soft glow featuring in 3m high silk lanterns placed throughout the 27 acre gardens. Born from an ancient Chinese tradition of lantern making, the beautiful sculptures were crafted over several months on hand-painted silk which is stretched over wire frames.

LANTASIA has proven to be such a success that the Boneo Maze team are now at expanding the event and commissioning new artists for 2017.

We had a feeling this would be something special for families. But we have been happily surprised by just how enthusiastically families have responded to Lantasia. It’s an event for families to experience pure joy together, and it’s a wonderful way to slow down the pace and explore the outdoors at night time – with a magical glow to make it all the more memorable.” – said owner Michael Wittingslow

Michael has said that following on from the success of this and their New Years Eve event catering for kids, they’re already planning additional features for 2017.

The good news is that it’s not too late to see the lanterns in 2016. Illuminated giant insects, birds and butterflies have awed visitors – busy kids love running ahead and finding the next character, and the land of make believe is alive and well.

It’s a magical ‘I Spy’ experience.  As the sun sets and the lanterns shine, children also enjoy riding the vintage carousel, run along charming boardwalks and play giant outdoor board games
