Honoured to critique entries & present awards

What a privilege to join young entrants tonight of the Friends of Doveton Library Casey Cardinia Libraries annual youth writing awards.

I was moved and motivated by so many talented, insightful young writers in this thriving community. These are our future storytellers, and they hold the stories of people, place, community and culture.

It was a pleasure to read and remark on each winner’s entry and to share with their families how opportunities like this nurture talent.

I also talked about my Children’s Book Council of Australia journey and encouraged young writers to keep writing their drafts and keep submitting to prizes to grow their confidence and experience.

Congratulations to all winners and highly commended entrants.

Congratulations also to young entrant Andrea (I had to get a pic with my namesake!) who won two awards.

Andrea had such a lovely pace to her writing and commanded a sense of place in her submissions. It was so lovely to hear her read her winning works tonight and swap awards!

Public Libraries are brimming with endless possibilities for writers.

Pictures of entrants shared with permission.

Cheers,

Andrea
